Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest cell phone on the 19th (local time), keeping its price level the same as last year and solidifying its niche market initiative.

The smartphone maker priced the Galaxy Z Flip 4 clamshell at $999.99 (€968.76), while the 7.6-inch Galaxy Z Fold 4 main screen with 5G support started at $1,799.99 (€1,743.77), the same launch price as last year’s model in the United States.

“We have successfully transformed this category from a radical project into a mainstream line of devices used by millions of people around the world.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4, as well as the latest Galaxy Buzz 2 Pro headphones, will also be available in the United States, parts of Europe and South Korea starting August 26.

Counterpoint Search predicts that global shipments of foldable smartphones will grow to 16 million units this year, representing just 1.2 percent of the projected smartphone shipments of 1.36 billion units, but up significantly from the 9 million foldable devices shipped last year.

The overall smartphone market will atrophy this year due to lower consumer demand, but foldable smartphones are likely to do better because of their unusual form factors, larger screens and portability.

In the first half of 2022, Samsung had a 62% market share of foldable smartphones, followed by 16% by Huawei and 3% by Oppo. Counterpoint predicts that Samsung Electronics will have about 80% share in the second half of the year after the new launch.

Samsung said its folding phone sales aim to surpass the Galaxy Note, its flagship smartphone, in the second half of the year.

“The Folder has helped Samsung stand out … “Apple will be a key competitor to Samsung in the future, and we expect the Folder to be released by Apple in 2024 or 2025,” said Jane Park, a senior analyst at Counterpoint.

Samsung said the latest models make it easier for phone owners to use popular apps such as Instagram and Microsoft Outlook.
